#HeritageChat

#HeritageChat was a monthly Twitter chat for the historic environment sector.

#HeritageChat was born as a means of widening Heritage2020 programme’s consultation process. In 2020, it became an opportunity for HEF to engage in a conversation with the wider sector. #HeritageChat closed in 2022, but you can explore all past conversations in our #HeritageChat archive.

We look forward to sharing news about our new engagement activity soon!

The chat was led in collaboration with the Council for British Archaeology, with Neil Redfern (Executive Director) participating.

The chat was led in collaboration with Tricolor Associates, and we shared some tweets from Martin Kaufman.

Participants debated topics such as: what funding opportunities are missing from the current offer for the sector; suggestions on how to make funding application easier for small heritage organisations, the impact of Covid-19 and the opportunities of the Culture Recovery Fund; digital crowdfunding; successes in how funding has enabled organisations to improving diversity; funding for progression in the heritage sector in 2021.

#HeritageChat January 2021 – Historic Environment & Climate Change

We devoted our January’s #HeritageChat to ‘Historic Environment and Climate Change’. The chat provided an opportunity to explore how our sector can become more ‘green’ and mitigate the impact of climate change at a local level. Participants also discussed how to bring relevant climate change research and heritage management practice closer together. Participants shared tips and experiences on how to improve monitoring and evaluation of climate change mitigation or adaptation measures in heritage. Professionals acknowledge that our sector can support environmental progress, but participants explored how we can improve a wider understanding in an engaging way.

This chat, led by our COP26 Task Group Manager, will aid the work of the group, which aims to facilitate a joined-up, coherent approach to climate change and sustainability ahead of the COP26 event (Glasgow, November 2021). A full summary of the chat can be found here.

#HeritageChat December 2020 – Christmas & Heritage

December’s #HeritageChat provided an opportunity to celebrate the upcoming festive period, by tweeting about ‘Christmas & Heritage’, a topic suggested by Time Walk Project Sheffield. Organisations and individuals shared their local Christmas traditions, providing the opportunity to discuss old and new traditions. They suggested their favourite heritage-related Twitter Advent Calendars and shared some wintery pictures of the heritage they care for. Finally, organisations had the opportunity to showcase the Christmas-related initiatives they organised. Read here the summary of the chat.

#HeritageChat November 2020 – Overlap between natural and historic environment

November’s Heritage Chat was devoted to ‘Overlap between natural and historic environment’, and was led in collaboration with Natural England. Participants lively debated some important topics such as the joined protection of historic and natural environment, the enhancement of biodiversity, opportunities for the ELMs, the sector’s contribution to tackling climate change, ‘rewilding’ issues. A full summary of the chat can be found here.

#HeritageChat October 2020 – Diversity and inclusion in the heritage sector

October’s Heritage Chat was devoted to ‘Diversity and Inclusion in the Heritage Sector’, since these are cross-cutting principles of the activities carried out by the Historic Environment Forum. The Heritage Alliance helped us lead the chat, as they are working on their future report on this topic. Participants shared thoughts on the challenges faced by the heritage sector to foster inclusive practices, as well as the solutions adopted by each organisation, best practices and free resources available online. A full summary of the chat can be found here.
